Why Protein Comes First

After bariatric surgery your stomach is tiny, so meals must be protein-dense to prevent muscle loss, hair loss, and malnutrition. ASMBS-aligned guidance puts the stabilized minimum around 60–80 g/day, sometimes higher.

Phase Context

  • Liquid phases (weeks 1–2): 40–60 g from liquids.
  • Soft phase (weeks 3–6): 60–80 g.
  • Stable phase (2+ months): 60–100 g.

Because volume is limited, prioritize lean protein at every meal and use shakes only to fill gaps.

Our Bariatric Calculator returns a phase-appropriate protein target. See post-op diet phases and the Bariatric hub.
