Weight is a blunt instrument
The scale cannot distinguish muscle from fat, water from bone. Body composition — the proportion of fat to lean tissue — explains why two people at the same weight can look and perform completely differently, and it is a better health signal than weight alone.
Body-fat percentage ranges shift with sex and age. Very low levels carry health risks (essential fat is about 2-5% in men and 10-13% in women), while moderate ranges are compatible with good health. Waist circumference and waist-to-height ratio add the dimension weight misses: where fat sits.
Measuring it
Methods range from DEXA (among the most accurate, and it also reports bone density) to bioelectrical impedance (convenient but sensitive to hydration) to skinfold calipers (dependent on skill). No home method is precise; all are useful as trends when measured the same way, same conditions, over time.
A practical stance
Use BMI as a first screen, body-fat and waist measures for context, and photos plus measurements for progress. None replaces a proper health assessment.
Honest limitations
Every body-composition method has error. Home scales and calipers can be off by several percentage points; even DEXA varies between machines. Use them for direction over months, measured consistently — never for a single-number verdict. A clinician's assessment remains the standard for medical decisions.
