Where the Myth Comes From
"Eating for two" suggests doubling intake — but the science says otherwise. Per IOM/ACOG, calorie needs rise only late:
- First trimester: no extra calories needed.
- Second trimester: about +340 kcal/day.
- Third trimester: about +452 kcal/day.
These are added to pre-pregnancy maintenance, not stacked on a deficit.
Better Framing
Quality beats quantity. Early pregnancy is when folate, iron, and protein matter most. Excess empty calories mostly add fat, not a healthier baby.
