BMR Formula Comparison: Mifflin-St Jeor vs Harris-Benedict

Several equations estimate resting energy use, and they do not all agree. The Mifflin-St Jeor equation is the one most clinicians and this site use today because it predicts measured resting metabolic rate more accurately than older formulas for modern populations.

What "metabolism" really means

Metabolism is the sum of every chemical process that keeps you alive — and the calories those processes burn. The largest single piece is your resting (basal) metabolic rate, the energy you use doing nothing but breathing and maintaining body temperature. For most adults this is 60-75% of total daily energy use.

Calculators, including ours, estimate resting metabolism with validated equations such as Mifflin-St Jeor, then multiply by an activity factor to estimate total daily expenditure. These are estimates: measured metabolism varies by several hundred calories between people of the same size.

The factors that move it

Lean mass is the biggest lever you control. Muscle burns more at rest than fat, and building or keeping it blunts age-related slowdown. Thyroid function sets the baseline pace; illness, very low calorie intake, and large weight loss all push resting burn down through adaptive thermogenesis.

Non-exercise movement (NEAT) — walking, fidgeting, chores — is surprisingly powerful and highly variable between people. Diet-induced thermogenesis, mostly from protein, adds a smaller consistent bump.

What does not move it much

No food, tea, or supplement produces a large or lasting metabolic change. Caffeine and capsaicin cause small, short-lived bumps. "Cleanses" and "metabolism resets" are marketing, not physiology. The reliable drivers remain body composition, total intake, and consistent movement.

Honest limitations

Equations estimate, they do not measure, your metabolism. Two people with identical stats can differ by hundreds of calories. Lab testing exists but is sensitive to recent food, caffeine, and stress. Treat any number as a starting point to be confirmed by your real weight trend over a few weeks.
