TDEE Activity Multipliers Explained: How the Levels Work
TDEE (total daily energy expenditure) is your BMR plus everything else — food digestion and all movement. Because we cannot easily measure daily movement, most calculators apply an "activity multiplier" to your BMR. This guide explains what those multipliers mean, where they come from, and how to pick the right one.

The standard multiplier table

Example: a BMR of 1,500 kcal/day at "moderately active" (1.55) gives a TDEE near 2,325 kcal/day. That is the estimate of what keeps weight steady.
Why multipliers exist
Directly measuring TDEE requires lab equipment (doubly labeled water or indirect calorimetry). For everyday planning, multiplying BMR by an activity factor is a cheap, reasonable shortcut. The factors are population averages drawn from research comparing measured energy expenditure to reported activity.
The common mistake: overrating yourself
People reliably rate their activity higher than it is. A few gym sessions a week does not make most people "very active" — that level implies hard training nearly every day. When caught between two levels, pick the lower one; it is easier to eat slightly more later than to stall because your target was too high.
Using TDEE for a goal
- Maintain: eat at TDEE.
- Lose: eat 300-500 kcal below TDEE.
- Gain: eat 250-500 kcal above TDEE.
Because multipliers are approximations, watch the scale for 2-3 weeks. If weight does not move as expected, nudge intake down or up by about 100-200 kcal and re-test. Our calorie-deficit calculator builds this into a target for you.
Non-exercise movement still counts
Formal workouts are only part of "activity." Daily steps, chores, and fidgeting (NEAT) can swing your real burn by hundreds of calories. Two people with the same multiplier can have very different actual TDEEs based on how much they move outside the gym.
Honest limitations
Multipliers estimate, they do not measure. They cannot capture your exact routine, and they do not account for metabolic adaptation during dieting. Use TDEE as a hypothesis to test against the scale, not as a fixed truth. This is educational information, not medical advice.
