The Goal: Steady Glucose
Gestational diabetes is managed primarily through medical nutrition therapy — consistent carbohydrate distribution, not elimination. Spacing carbs across meals and snacks keeps post-meal glucose in range (often <140 mg/dL at 1–2 hours, per ADA/ACOG).
Common targets:
- ~30–45 g of carbohydrate per meal
- 15–30 g per snack
- Three meals plus 2–3 snacks
The fetus needs carbohydrate, so the aim is distribution and quality, not zero.
